CW’s Fly Girls

By The Flying Pinto

The new “reality” show Fly Girls is set to air tonight. I was going to wait until I saw the show to actually post about it but, there have been so many write ups by journalists who have seen the first two episodes that I think I get the idea. Megan Angelo sums it up here, in WSJ’s Speak Easy Blog and I like what Hank Stuever from The Washington Post has to say too.

Ok, I am not even going to go into whether or not the show is degrading to women or flight attendants in general. What I do want to know is why they didn’t choose to depict the real lifestyle of a flight attendant in this reality show? I remember thinking when I was living in a crash pad, MTVs Real World was popular at the time, that they should have a real world flight attendant version. I’m not even opposed to the “million dollar” crash pad. I figured it would be difficult if not impossible to fit all the camera equipment in the hotel room that I shared with fifteen other reserve flight attendants.

But, just curious, isn’t real life more interesting? Had the show come out in the early 70’s it may have been closer to the truth. But, the Virgin America flight attendants in the show barely fly, they attend red carpet events in uniform, and more importantly, enjoy cocktails in uniform. Flight Attendants are not even allowed to stop at the store and purchase liquor while in uniform let alone drink it in uniform! CW and Virgin could have used the same five women, and let the drama unfold as it would, in their real experiences as new flight attendants.

I spent three years in crash pads, and I know it would have made for an interesting show. We had a flight attendant dating a married, famous, actor who used to have a lot of 3am conversations. Then there are the 3am calls from scheduling…you hear the phone ring, someone stumbles to get it, answers`, “yeah, this is flight attendant Pinto….yeah…yeah…yeah…ok.” hangs up and exclaims, “F**K” and then starts crying. Trust me there is a lot of “real” drama going on in the airline crash pads without trying to create a world that doesn’t even exist. What will these girls do when the show is over? Surely they can’t go back to being boring, ordinary flight attendants!

I’ll be watching the premiere tonight at 9:00pm est with my “fly girls” over at twitter. Grab your glass of wine and join our conversation at twitter.com/theflyingpinto

    thanks for the warning
Do you have a safety instruction for
"in the case of a reality TV show about airlines"??
I truly believe reality TV was invented to save networks money. All of them are so unreal.

I've often thought the same thing about these "reality" shows. REAL reality is so much more interesting!

Were they actors pretending to be flight attendants? It didn't seem like reality but more scripted.

I agree they should go to a "real" crash pad. We had all kinds of drama.

  4. I absolutely support your thoughts that our REAL lives as flight attendants have more drama than 'reality' tv…

Jake, our Bachelor, from MY airlines… they glamorized his job… made the whole show about the handsome airline pilot… yeah well lets see how much glamor Vienna sees when she's traveling nonrev on Delta flights… and she's an S3C… BELOW all the Delta employees… and sitting in the center seats… not together… flying at odd hours to get to your destination for sure… and oh wait… how about never really knowing when your spouse will come home because of irregular operations because heaven forbid it's RAINING in Atlanta… He's a pilot… Its a great job… but glamorous its not…

Maybe thats why they made this show not "REAL" because people WANT the airline industry to be glamorous… we should ALL be sipping champagne with actors… being wined and dined by politicians… wearing REAL 5 carat diamonds on our hands by the rich entrepreneur that picked us up when we flew to NY…

I'll take my drama thank you… the always changing schedules… the fatigue… the man I love who's not quite mine to have permanently for another year… I'll take the girls I know who have a second life as waitresses… and writers… the divorced… the single parents… because our world is REAL… full of real joy and real sorrow…

oh, this is exactly how I feel!!! I've been in 5 different crashpads in NYC before finally moving here and it was a very different reality then what they showed on TV.

I just shudder to think of the passengers who really do take this as reality. I've already been told facts about my job and salary from passengers that might have been true YEARS ago but where no where near close to true now.

I think a real "reality show" about our lives would be way better and way more interesting!!!

I have it TiVo'd to watch later. I thought of you when I saw the promos but figured it would have the "hollywood Spin" all over it.

Thanks for the reminder to watch.

    Have a great wekend.

Hey pinto, don't know if you check your blog often but I just mentioned it over on my blog.
I was hoping you could share your insight into the carry-on bag trend. One report I heard today said FA's are reporting more back and shoulder strains.
    thanks

If you are looking for great amenities while you are on vacation, the El Cid Vacation is one option for you to look forward to. When it comes to security, you will not have to worry about the safety of the whole community because the entrances for these resorts have gates and a 24-hour security to serve people on a daily basis. If you find living in El Cid resorts an excellent choice for you and your family so you can build new relationships with the community, you'll absolutely find this an excellent option for you to look into.
